The Beauty of a Berry

Metallic purple berries in fall and winter cover the branches of a work horse shrub, Callicarpa ‘Profusion’. Often called beautyberry, this deciduous shrub might initially seem of little note with its lilac spring blooms being dainty in size and green foliage being somewhat common in appearance.

As autumn arrives the clusters of shiny violet berries become the highlight of the garden. ‘Profusion’ can grow 6’ tall and wide. Consider pairing it with ornamental grasses that are turning shades of gold and red to provide colorful contrast. Plant beautyberry in full sun or light shade areas. These shrubs require very little care, and ‘Profusion’ is our favored variety because it is self-fertile and routinely is covered with abundant berries each fall. Fittingly the athletic complex near the University of Washington has planted many of these shrubs in their landscape to enjoy the royal purple tones. Not only will huskies enjoy callicarpa, but also birds who find their winter fruits quite nutritious.

Come wander the scenic nursery paths at Squak Mt. to discover shrubs that bring interest to your fall and winter garden.
