The hottest ticket in town is now on center stage at Squak Mt! Welcome the head-turning new ‘Popstar’ hydrangea, boasting bright electric blue or vibrant pink flowers. The lace cap blooms occur on both new and old growth, resulting in an endless parade of blooms all summer long. In fact, this addition to the much beloved ‘Endless Summer’ family of hydrangeas is the most prolific re-bloomer ever introduced!
Lace cap style blooms feature fertile florets in the center that are attractive to pollinators, surrounded by flat, “cap” like petals. You can change the bloom color by adjusting the pH of your soil. In our area the soil is typically acidic, resulting in blue blossoms. Hydrangeas also make wonderful cut flowers. Simply remove the bloom at peak bloom and place it in a water filled vase.
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Popstar’ is small in stature, growing only be 18”-36” tall and wide, so you may never need to use the pruners on this deciduous, easy care shrub. Its compact habit makes it ideal for small garden spaces, landscape borders and containers. As ‘Popstar’ is a macrophylla (big leaf) type of hydrangea, it will perform best in morning summer sun or filtered sun locations.
