Akin to a chameleon changing color depending on its hideaway, a smokebush (Cotinus coggygria) will adapt through the seasons, changing color with each one. ‘Winecraft Black’ has another alluring feature in that its compact form (4-6’ tall and wide) is much easier to locate in the garden than traditional varieties that reach 10-15’.
Spring’s new growth pushes out new leaves in a rich purple. Early summer features the famed soft, airy bloom clouds in pink and red bringing a smoke like appearance. The deep heat of summer has the leaves intensifying to nearly ebony black. Fall brings ‘Winecraft Black’s’ grand finale. The leaves’ transition from midnight to a kaleidoscope of reds and oranges is the crescendo of this gorgeous shrub. ‘Winecraft’ would be a fantastic choice as a border plant, just provide sun and decent drainage.
