Are you looking to add a tough shrub to your landscape that is also lovely in three seasons? Look no further then Diervilla, a deciduous shrub in the bush honeysuckle family that can handle difficult garden situations. This shrub is native to eastern United States and can thrive in sun or shade. Diervilla grow in almost any soil type, including clay, rocky or dry soils, and once established is drought tolerant. Their strong roots (this is not an invasive species of Diervilla) also make the bush honeysuckle an excellent solution to stop erosion on banks. This deer resistant plant attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators. Today at Squak Mt. you will discover two excellent varieties of Diervilla:
‘Kodiak Red’
Red foliage emerges in the spring, and then matures green. In fall the leaves turn brilliant red. Summer brings on clusters of small yellow flowers. Grows 3’ high by 4’ wide.
‘Honeybee’
Sunny yellow foliage all season long. Yellow flowers all summer add to the charm of this variety. A great plant for a smaller area of the landscape, ‘Honeybee’ will get 3’ tall by 4’ wide.
