Creating your own container using various summer annuals is a fun, imaginative process. Begin with taller plants for the center. For example, geraniums and Solenia begonias often fit this role. Next you may want to select trailing plants, like calibrachoa and bacopa, to spill over your pot’s edge.
Allow us to share a tip from the designers at Squak Mt. Adding an airy, delicate plant whose leaves and blooms dance mid-air, without crowding neighboring plants, can take a design from beautiful to remarkable.
Two of our favorite “airy” additions for sunny locations are euphorbia and cuphea. Euphorbia feature small bracts that are held aloft on thin stems above dainty leaves. One of our favorite varieties is ‘Breathless Blush’, which features pink blooms and green blushed red foliage. Euphorbias are very adaptable, thriving in full sun or partial sun locations.
Cuphea boast narrow tube-like blooms that hang like bells amidst its branches. This annual loves sun and heat. Consider ‘Cherrybells’ with orange flowers that are a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies.
When you plant cuphea or euphorbia among other summer annuals it will bring another dimension of color, texture and interest to your container. We look forward to helping you bring your colorful container creation to life at Squak Mt soon.
