Posted April 17th, 2012 in Annuals & Baskets, Container Gardening

Take a trip to the tropics with the dazzling colors and textures featured in this container recipe created for you by the designers at Squak Mt.  Deep purple and burgundy tones are offset by lime green and orange to create contrast that every eye will find irresistible.  The multiple leaf textures also add appeal as your container will abundantly celebrate our hottest summer months.  This recipe will thrive in full sun or partial sun conditions.

All of the plants in our design are grouped together at Squak Mt. to make it quick and easy for you to select them.  Size and number of plants can be adapted for any size pot. The quantities listed here fit a pot approximately 18-22” in diameter. We also have pre-planted containers with this recipe so that you may take them home complete and ready to enjoy. Our friendly staff would be pleased to assist you further as you create bring the ‘Purple Tropics’ to your garden.

  1. Perilla ‘Magilla’ – 1 plant –   Purple and magenta coleus like foliage.  Grows 18-24” high.
  2. Festival Cordyline – 1 plant – Strappy burgundy grass like foliage with a cascading habit can grow 2’-3’ high.
  3. Geranium ‘Indian Dunes’ or ‘Vancouver Centennial’ – 1 plant – Fancy leaf zonal geraniums provide striking color contrasts.  Foliage is bronze with a border of lime green.  Also features bright orange blooms in summer.
  4. Potato Vine ‘Blackie’ – 3 plants – This ipomoea with nearly black foliage gracefully drapes over the edge of containers.
  5. New Guinea Impatiens – 2 plants – See article in this newsletter.  Consider varieties with fuchsia or bright orange blooms.
  6. Coleus ‘Gay’s delight’ – 1 plant – This sun tolerant plant features lime green foliage with black veins.  24-36” high.

We recommend waiting until May before planting summer annuals (such as those featured in this recipe) outdoors in our area.

A diagram of how we recommend laying out your container is available as a printed handout at Squak Mt. today.

The photo taken here is of a recently potted container to give you a better idea of the colors and textures in this design.  The plants will continue to fill the pot out quickly in the days ahead.

‘Marguarita’ & Trailing Annuals

Posted April 16th, 2012 in Annuals & Baskets

Starring heart shaped leaves and a brilliant lime green color, Ipomoea ‘Marguarita’ has become a favorite trailing annual for summer gardens. They look equally beautiful cascading out of a hanging basket as they do draping over the side of a planted container.  Ipomoea desires sun or part sun conditions. An individual plant can trail more than 24” in length as it adds a brilliant splash of color to your landscape.

In addition to Ipomoea, Squak Mt. grows a multitude of other top performing annuals that trail, for sun or shade, including: bacopa, calibrachoa, nemesia, snow princess alyssum,  trailing petunias, verbena and many more.  Here is a complete listing of varieties we are growing for your summer enjoyment.  Supplies are limited.

‘Snow Princess’ Alyssum

Posted May 17th, 2011 in Annuals & Baskets

For years we have enjoyed the fragrance and color from the crops of alyssum we have grown in our greenhouses.  There is a revolutionary new alyssum, ‘Snow Princess’.  We first introduced this plant in 2010.  This alyssum does not generate seeds, so it spends its energy blooming and growing.  You will discover this vigorous variety creates mounds of small, white fragrant blooms all summer long.  It will grow spectacularly in full sun or partial shade.  ‘Snow Princess’ is more heat tolerant than our old favorite ‘Carpet of Snow’, but will still require regular watering.

‘Snow Princess’ can be planted in beds to create a great splash of color, and we are anticipating it being particularly popular in baskets and combination containers.  It will billow over the edge of your pots, its foliage and blooms trailing down up to 60”!  Our new alyssum is easy to care for, and does not require any deadheading.  Not only will it attract attention from your friends and family, you may also find the butterflies enjoy visiting its fragrant blooms.

Squak Mt Greenhouses is your premier grower of summer annuals.  Come find the new ‘Snow Princess’ alyssum along with other favorite trailing summer annuals, including calibrachoa, petunias, bacopa, verbena and many, many more.

A Golden Summer

Posted May 9th, 2011 in Annuals & Baskets

Add brilliant gold color to your hanging baskets and containers with two of our favorite trailing summer annuals, grown in our greenhouses at Squak Mt.

Bidens ‘Mexican Gold’

If you’re looking for the perfect plant to brighten up your hanging combination baskets, then Bidens ‘Mexican Gold’ will fit the bill. Brilliant yellow daisy-shaped flowers bloom all summer long on this vigorous plant, adding dramatic color to hot color combination baskets, or adding complimentary color to softer hued combinations. The deep green, finely textured, well- branched foliage interweaves through the basket, adding a nice contrast to heavier foliaged plants, while providing an almost cloudlike effect of yellow flowers above the foliage. A prolific and early bloomer, ‘Mexican Gold’ will grow 18” long, but can be kept shorter if pinched occasionally. It will continue to bloom all season long in a sunny location with minimal care and no deadheading required. Regular watering and a bit of timed release fertilizer added at the time of planting will keep your Bidens ‘Mexican Gold’ looking its best. As the perfect addition to a hanging combination basket, ‘Mexican Gold’ is worth its weight in gold!

Sanvitalia ‘Cuzco Yellow’

Relatively new to our greenhouses, Sanvitalia ‘Cuzco Yellow’ has quickly become one of our favorite summer annuals. Ideally suited for container combinations, this sunny yellow plant is practically perfect in every way. Producing masses of tiny daisy like flowers, it will spill over edges about a foot, making a stunning presence in any container. The green centered, bright yellow flowers bloom like a mounding carpet of color, born on deep green foliage, somewhat stiff and oval-shaped, that is not prone to diseases or insects. Having an abnormally long bloom time, these plants were still in full, perfect bloom in November, finally dying off in the bitter cold. Being drought tolerant, and needing no pinching or deadheading, you can understand why it’s a favorite. Requiring only a sunny location to keep it blooming profusely, you just can’t go wrong adding Sanvitalia Cuzco Yellow to your sunny containers.  Visit the greenhouses at Squak Mt. today to find your favorite annuals for abundant summer blooms.

Black Petunias

Posted May 1st, 2011 in Annuals & Baskets

A petunia of drama, mystery and intrigue has just entered the main stage.  Our brand new ‘Phantom’, ‘Black Velvet’ and ‘Pinstripe’ petunias will be exquisite additions to your pots and beds this summer.  ‘Black Velvet’ is the world’s first and only petunia with a black bloom.  ‘Phantom’ will fill your garden with music as it features a black bloom color with a distinctive yellow star pattern.  The third member of our triad is the ever sophisticated and classy ‘Pinstripe’ in darkest purple blooms with a cream white star pattern emblazoned on each bloom.

All of these new petunia varieties growing in our greenhouses are upright and mounding in habit.  They are fully branched and bloom without stop all summer long.  These petunias are maintenance free and require no dead heading.  Give them multiple feedings of fertilizer (try our 100% organic Bouquet) to maximize their performance.   Try mixing them with other sun loving summer annuals to create a show in your favorite baskets and containers that will have the whole town talking.

The deep color of ‘Black Velvet’ will show off best when contrasted with bright blooms and leaves.  Try spilling lime ipomoea from the side of your pot and plant a striking Gartenmeister fuchsia in the center for a vibrant orange accent.  Or consider mixing a New Guinea impatien with variegated yellow leaves and an orange bloom with our new petunia clad in all black.  Alternatively you may simply plant a planting bed with a flowing drift of Black Velvet bordered by either Phantom or Pinstripe.  The greenhouses at Squak Mt. are bursting with homegrown summer annuals.  Come and find new varieties and old favorites today.
